”Illustrious Corpses” (Cadaveri Eccellenti) was shown at the 1976 New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall. Following are excerpts from a review by Vincent Canby in the New York Times of Oct. 6, 1976. This film opens today at the Thalia.

MORE and more, Francesco Rosi, the Italian director of such politically conscious films as ”Salvatore Giuliano,” ”Hands Upon the City” and the recent ”The Mattei Affair,” has come to construct his movies as if they were jig-saw puzzles from which key pieces must remain missing. This is not because he hasn’t a very good idea what the missing pieces are, but because he thinks that to supply them would dampen the specualation he means to stir up.

Sometimes, as in the case of ”The Mattei Affair,” this works. But then ”The Mattei Affair” was based on the life of an Italian industrialist who died under circumstances that have never been satisfactorily explained. In the newest Rosi film, ”Illustrious Corpses” (”Cadaveri Eccellenti”), the method is self-defeating. It stirs up not speculation but suspicions that the completed picture is artificially made more complex and provocative than its missing pieces would have revealed it to be.

Until one realizes that one has been manipulated to rather predictable ends, ”Illustrious Corpses” is a dazzling example of fashionably radical Italian film making – elegantly composed, breathlessly paced, photographed in the beautiful, drained colors of a landscape in mourning for the sun.

The setting of ”Illustrious Corpses” seems to be Sicily, though it’s never identified, which allows the director to create a fictious capitalistic social-political structure that cannot be immediately criticized for not being accurately Italian. Wherever it is, corruption and conspiracies are rampant, the poor are getting poorer, the rich are getting richer.

The film begins effectively enough. A prominent prosecutor is murdered. Several days later, a prominent judge is similarly assassinated. Later another judge, and another. The country is thrown into disorder. Inspector Rogas (Lino Ventura), a creased, tired policeman from a more conventional mystery melodrama, investigates and becomes convinced that a man, who was once wrongly convicted and sent to prison, is carrying but a campaign of revenge.

”Illustrious Corpses” is full of individually arresting details, such as a sequence shot in an ancient catacomb and a scene in which Max Von Sydow, as the mad chief justice, explains that when a judge ”celebrates the law” he is like a priest celebrating mass and thus incapable of error.

All of these arresting details and bizarre characters don’t eventually add up to much more than an indictment of government that’s so broad, so general, it has no particular force. The end effect is trivial

You cannot just “be” Italian
even if you are born into la famiglia.
You start by teething on buttery pizzelles,
ingesting a bit of anisette
to soothe your tummy.

You begin to eat dittalini,
“small fingers” of pasta
drenched in sauce
from tomatoes drenched in the summer sun.
You pick them up with chubby hands
and imagine all Italians eating with gusto.

You savor the rind from a chunk of Grana Padano -
nutty, tangy cheese with a wretched stench
that drives your friends away
and all the better, there is more for you.

Your lover thinks of your body
as the Italian countryside
his fingers rolling through the richness
of rivers, valleys, vines.
And when you explode with emotions, it must be
because you cannot sit idle
while the world calls you dego, wop.
You are padre, amico, madre, que bella italiana.

To be Italian, you must feel the bows rocking
on the Madonna or Lafayette
as the ships cross the Atlantic,
inhale the smoke of hot iron
or the steam off the rising dough,
put in years of hard work
in the garden and kitchen,
like the Etruscans who fended off
those from foreign lands,
to keep pure the race of olive-skinned.

You slurp calamari with the same delight
that ‘mericanos slurp spaghetti
and know that someday
your two eye brows will become one,
not from hair,
but from the creases on your temple
where your determination
has met the world head on.

After my recent stints of sales person at Kenwood for my sister’s business – Golf-Chic Boutique – I was reminded of how hard retailers work for such little reward. I want to be mindful of that fact this season when sales are down and so are spirits. This is my ode to such.

Selling Ourselves

Father and Uncle would be frantic,
look busy, they would crow
to all the employees
who had toiled in the shadows
of 26th and Broadway
beneath the banner of Januzzi’s Shoes.

Together they paced the aisles
before Father would return
to the back office space
and pore over “the books”.

We would be dispersed to our stations.
Brother to the store room to unpack
the cardboard cartons delivered by the man in brown.
It would have been like Christmas, if Brother had been me,
caressing each style before pricing and stocking
it on the shelves.

Sister would slowly wind her way
behind the counter
and stand stoic beside the rigid
cash register queen, who scolded her
when wrinkled ones and fives were turned opposite
of the crisp tens and twenties.

And Grandpa, founder, mender
would retire to the repair stand in the corner
where we would sneak off to sniff
the musk of newly shaped leather
and the glue that cobbled lives together.

Customer names were recorded on cards
kept in a cabinet in the men’s department.
Filing the recently pulled or
pulling the filed always fell to me.

I would make it a game,
see how fast I could order the stack
Sometimes I would sneak a peak
at the cards of boys whom I was
madly in love with.
I would feel betrayed
by their wearing of new loafers
knowing that brand had been bought elsewhere.

Retail was never easy
even before big box stores
swallowed up ideas and families.
Tension lingered in the air
on the days of sales
causing aisles of shoes to quake -
the children’s section leaning into the men’s boots
the rows of nursing whites holding back the women’s heels,
and ice skates teetering on the top shelves
placed by the night elves, above my head.

To keep from descending into the chaos of the “floor”
Father would stop entering bills
in the green bound books that recorded our prosperity
We would pace,waiting for lunchtime,
then pile into the Suburban
and drive to the home of the
five-sided burger and vanilla shakes.

The business had been blessed
by the presence of the steel mill, the hospital,
children, and those who needed orthopedic shoes.
As if the family store was a ministry itself -
serving and fitting -
and that purpose fed them,
not the money rung up for each purchase
and carefully counted at day’s end.

Customers were never happy with
the price, the style, the fit.
Widows squirmed in green vinyl chairs
squeezing bones into shoes on sale,
waiting for us to admire their toes
in the slanted shoe mirror.
We could never lie to them, we could
never tell the truth.

We only knew that the odor of unwashed feet
would cause us

to seek out Grandpa’s shoe glue

or steal away to the store room,
relieved momentarily
of the duty and pride of having to sell
the shoes, the business, our selves.
